I tend to be somewhat of a fanatic about the concept and the literalreature that is the dragon. I have poured over legends and text that rang as far back as theSumeriann ages. (these where translated versions and therefor most likely tainted.) But among all the various tellings and folklore I have noticed many disturbing facts about peoples outlook on this subject.
It seems that in teenagers the overall caring rate is very low, to the point the only people that even know more than the weastern versions of the dragons where more than a cartoon character. Pretty much the only people amoung the teenage population that knew anything on the subject where those that had interest in other works of fanasy like "Harry Potter" or the "Dragon Lance" crinicles.
I am looking for the vast majorities outlook upon this subject and more legends and if possible facts that can go torwards answering the long held question in my heart. Are dragons real, or simply a creature made up to entertain and mystify the masses.Theories about the dragons.?
I doubt the existence of dragons, but there is proof that even if they did exist, they did not fly.
There is a gradient among wing power and weight. An animal over 60lbs cannot have large enough wings to propel itself - the large size of wings would add on too much weight, thus the wings would need to be bigger, and the cycle continues.
Even the Pterodactyl, large as it was, weighed less than 60 lbs.
The large, mythical dragons you are talking about could not fly, even if they did exist. And if they could not fly, then why have the large wings? Unless of course you want to use the Ostrich example - however ostriches have developed other uses for their wings and are relatively new on the time scale, so their wings haven't evolved "out" yet. So, with this anatomical technicality (and the lack of any other proof), I do not believe in the existence of the dragons you speak of.
Think about this. Dragons are found in cultures all around the globe from the Americas, Europe, and Asia at different points in history. So I think some large bird with scales probably did exist but are now extinct. I saw a program on TV (I think it was the Animal Plant/Discovery Channel about 5 years ago) and it suggests that such an animal is likely to have existed. It also reveals that a large dragon-like carcass was found in a block of ice in Europe several years ago. Fascinating.
I think this is the proper link.

I find it fascinating that a creatures with the similarity of a Dragons have been described in different countries legions although they have never met before. I believe the reason for this is because the creatures that these people saw, and that we believe to be dragons are dinosaurs. It would descried why there are different pictures of different breeds of the same creature painted and described in these cultures and why we don't see them today.
Technically, dragons are real. The komodo dragon, the bearded dragon, and the sea dragon to name three. Of course, that's not quite what your talking about.
I don't think real "dragons" exist, as in the classic fire breathing kind, but I do believe that there is a grain of truth in there somewhere. Maybe dinosaur bones inspired the legends, or various facts about different newly discovered existing animals being misunderstood.
It is speculated that the unicorn was in fact a rhinoceros, so it's very possible that the dragon could have been any number of perfectly normal animals crawling around.Theories about the dragons.?
Linden, that program was entirely fiction, it was just made up to look like a real documentary.
a dragon's wings could never support it, it's impossible for an animal to breath fire, and what are you left with after that? Does it look something like this?

As many people have answered this question look at the time line how far back stories go about dragons the fact that nearly every culture has dragons in it as legend, there must be some truth in it somewhere.I myself love the thought of dragons being real after all there where dinosaurs, I watch a documentary on dragons it was called dragons myth or legend I think they even explained how dragons can be fire breathers.
Flying, fire-breathing dragons are entirely myth, but they are likely to have been inspired by real animals - perhaps the fossils of dinosaurs and pterosaurs, or even animals that co-existed with humans. For example, humans lived in Australia at the same time as Megalania, an enormous monitor lizard which is now extinct, and there are also crocodiles and large lizards like the Komodo dragon that may have contributed.
Incidentally, the person who said animals over 60lbs cannot fly is mistaken. Quetzalcoatlus, a large pterosaur, weighed considerably more than this - a study in 2002 suggested a weight of 200鈥?60lbs, and that's lower than most other recent estimates. Some estimates suggest it weighed as much as 550lbs!
